Out in Schools Volunteer Job Descriptions

Administrative Support

Energetic administrative support volunteers are needed to assist in the Out in Schools office. If you are admin savvy and interested in helping to end homophobia and create safer schools and communities for everyone, we need your help!

Duties include:

  • data entry
  • web research
  • mailouts
  • running errands

Qualifications or Assets:

  • computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • web savvy
  • familiarity with social media such as: facebook and twitter
  • data entry skills
  • knowledge and experience with printers, photocopiers, and faxing.
  • a positive attitude.

Out in Schools Ambassadors

Out in Schools is looking for outgoing, energetic people to be Ambassadors for our program. Out in Schools Volunteer Ambassadors are the face of Out in Schools at special events including: conferences, workshops, dances, art and community co-presentations, and special film screenings.

Duties include:

  • Assistance with promotions at special events
  • Advance prep, set-up and tear-down of information kiosks at special events
  • Community Liaison: Representing OIS and providing information about our program
  • Sales of 50/50 tickets, Lotto and other fundraising at special events (19+)
  • Events may include, Educational conferences, 3rd party fundraisers, Community Festivals, bars & clubs


  • Flexible to volunteer during mornings, afternoons, and evenings.
  • Some experience in event coordination
  • Friendly, personable, outgoing and committed to anti-homophobia and anti-bullying education.
  • Able to work individually and as part of a team.
  • Confident public speaking skills.

Out in Schools Advisory Group

The Out in Schools Advisory is comprised of professional educators, youth workers and experts in youth programming and curriculum. The role of the Advisory is to support and inform the sustainable growth of the program.

Duties Include:

  • Advise and provide input on general program development
  • Review and provide support for OIS resources and curricular initiatives
  • Willingness to participate in initiative-based, sub-group working groups
  • The OIS Advisory Group meets 3 times per year, in addition to sub-group activities


  • Background and training in Education, Curriculum Studies, Educational Policy, or Youth Outreach
  • Strong knowledge of LGBTQ issues in education
  • Relevant knowledge of BC Ministry of Education, BC Secondary School Curriculum and student PLO’s

Training and Resource Development Support

OIS Facilitators deliver engaging and consistent workshops. As we grow our facilitator team, we are seeking support to update our facilitator training program and develop new training resources.

Duties Include:

  • Working with Dir. of Programs and HR to update existing procedures and research new opportunities
  • Research and help to develop new Facilitator Training Manual
  • Research, help to develop and support online training program
  • Provide support at facilitator training sessions


  • Background in Training and Program Development
  • Experience leading group training sessions
  • Knowledge of industry trends for trainers and training resources (online focus)
  • Knowledge of LGTBQ issues is an asset.

Compensation: For every five hours of volunteering, a screening pass for the Vancouver Queer Film Festival will be issued. Additionally, volunteers will have the opportunity to take part in Out on Screen events.

Graphic Designers

We continually have small, or larger projects for graphic designers. These include developing creative for web and print ads, professional documents and reports and other small design projects

Duties Include:

  • Deadline driven design projects
  • Liaising with Client
  • Liaising with printing companies


  • Must have professional graphic design experience

Youth Steering Committee – Youth Allies Against Homophobia (YAAH!)

Our YAAH team is looking for additional members aged 25, and under to help inform the work we do at Out in School

Duties Include:

  • Attending and participating at monthly Committee meetings
  • Screening and selecting new video submissions to the OIS program
  • Lead and Support annual Rise Against Homophobia Youth Video Contest (RAH)
  • Liaise and Support RAH Youth Jury
  • Represent OIS at Youth-focused community events


  • Must be between 15 and 25 years of age
  • Must be passionate about LGBTQ issues
